Matt Yglesias takes Rahm Emmanuel’s suggestion to heart: never let a serious crisis go to waste. During a wildfire that has charred tens of thousands of Texas landscape, Yglesias (who was visiting Texas and posted running commentary not unlike that of an anthropologist visiting Papau New Guineau) made a point to link climate change to the fires with an undercurrent of Ward Churchill-esque “chickens coming home to roost”:
The whole situation sort of reminds me of Trotsky’s quip about the dialect [sic]. Neither Governor Perry nor the bulk of Texas’ citizens may be interested in climate change, but climate change is interested in them. People settle in certain places expecting the weather to be a certain way. When it changes, you get big problems.
A group of leading British economists have written a letter to the Financial Times urging Parliament to repeal the 50% marginal tax rate which they say is hampering the U.K.’s economy.
Dr. Warren Farrell, author of the landmark work The Myth of Male Power, was interviewed by Rahim Kanani on a prospective White House Council on Boys to Men. We’ll call any forthcoming meetings the Cooleyhighharmony Summit.
Farrell laid out 5 actionable categories to improve boys’ outcomes: Work, Education, Father Involvement, Mental Health, and Physical Health.
Over at GMP, Amanda Marcotte was invited to participate in a virtual roundtable to discuss “The Paradox of Male Honesty“. At one point in the exchange she suggests that men who laugh at sexist jokes should grow a spine. Which reminds me, did you hear the one about the female scientist? Yeah, me neither.
Zek J. Evets has written a mundane piece taking me to task for my “White Jew Problems” post in which I criticized Maxim editor Seth Porges for making a big deal about the pork in Chipotle’s pinto beans. Evets tries to cover a lot of ground – most importantly by charging me with being an anti-Semite, seemingly because I used the word “Jew” in my post title. The title is a play on a common meme of “White people problems” where blacks or other minorities laugh at the minor inconveniences that white people complain about on Facebook or on their blogs. To me, complaining about pork in beans displays the “white” part of the joke while applying it to Jews. Truth is, I don’t care about Semites; I have bigger fish to fry.
