Someone sent me a link to a video of a seemingly drunk Matt Yglesias – kumbayist, humanitarian, progressive blogger for Think Progress – basically jubilant over Tim Russert’s death. I don’t know the context, maybe Russert had screwed Yglesias’ mom, or maybe this was just a long-running joke in that portion of the blogosphere.
Now, to be fair, I could see myself joking at a party about a famous person’s death – especially when drunk. I’ve done it before, and I’ll probably do it again. But Yglesias and other cognitive elites/progressives/liberals pretend as if they have a corner on the empathy/humanitarian market. Their rhetoric is filled with dog-whistled messages that those who aren’t liberal “have no heart” – to borrow Rick Perry’s phrase.
But basically, Yglesias is an asshole just like you and me.
Update: That “interview” was conducted by Wonkette at an Utne beer-drinking festivity. It is still unclear if Yglesias was playing the foil for this interviewer after he got a lot of heat for writing an article critical of Russert three weeks before his death, or if he was relating his true feelings off-the-cuff. As a commenter at that site wrote, Matt Yglesias has a face for radio and voice for blogging.

Sorry, but your arguments in favor of “pragmatism” here in Texas don’t cut it. My husband grew up in El Paso, and it wasn’t always as heavily Mexican as it is now. Areas that just 20 years ago were all White are entirely Mexican. Same for Dallas. Whites just keep moving upward and outward; I’m presently searching the 2010 census map to find a heavily White census district we can move to in a few years, by which time the public high school I would have to send my youngest one to in my current suburb (private school tuition is killing us, and their high school is too small) will be perhaps 30% White (loads of Asians, and that’s a whole different can of worms).
As far as the “difficulty” of deportation, it’s not this incredible hurdle you seem to be painting it as. See a recent comment thread at Mangans regarding the same. Merely reversing the incentives that brought so many here (no free education or healthcare, no jobs without proof of citizenship) would cause a huge number to self-deport. Forcibly removing the remainder wouldn’t be the massive effort depicted.
I don’t think absolute numbers are indicative of the problem in any particular state; I’ve read elsewhere of the takeover of whole towns in Long Island or places in rural Washington state. Back when I lived in D.C., all the hassles were caused by Nicaraguans and Ecuadorans downtown. Now, they are a majority living in the neighborhood where I grew up.
Why are all the local road crews illegal Mexicans? Why can I not find an American citizen, for love or money, to do painting or yard work? My pest control guys are all Whites; so are the garage repairmen. I make a point not to patronize places that have entirely Latino staffs. I tell telemarketers, immediately prior to hanging up, that I only talk to Americans. I keep track of which company’s product has Spanish on the label and I buy the competitor’s item. It doesn’t take a nationwide, high-publicity boycott to change things; it does take people getting off their backsides and living as though their people matter.
What a herb. I can see how progressives could come off bad initially. I cringe whenever I see Sharpton on MSNBC.
