Allen Iverson has probably squandered $154 million. Yesterday, Ta-Nehisi Coates posted a Youtube video of a woman laying out an argument for why athletes tend to go broke. She also addresses whether race has anything to do with it.
Her arguments for why athletes tend to squander their wealth:
The main issue is taking care of family members. Athletes are willing to dole money out to their “homeboys”, parents, cousins, etc.
People hurrying them into business before the athlete is ready. Most athletes do not have time to properly monitor their investments.

Of the four arguments, the only one which the woman accepts any racial explanation for is the tendency for black athletes to have too many kids. But that variable is explained by the same factor that explains 2 and 3, and may also explain parts of 1. Poor future-time orientation i.e. low IQ. Pertaining to 2 above – the woman makes the statement that “people hurry” athletes into business. This begs the question: why are athletes stupid enough to get hurried into business? Not being bright enough to know when and when not to go into business is part of the problem as is not being bright enough to select a woman who isn’t trying to get your money or your sperm.
The best indicator of IQ we have in sports is the Wonderlic test conducted on potential NFL draftees. Here is a breakdown by position of Wonderlic scores:
The highest scoring positions are quarterback, and offensive line. The lowest scoring positions are defensive backfield, offensive backfield, and wide receiver. Of the QB and O-line positions, 80% of NFL quarterbacks are white as are over half of offensive linemen. Black players are the vast majority of all of the other positions.
So the woman providing the explanations for some athletes squandering their wealth doesn’t go far enough. Stupidity is certainly part of the problem.

One of the theories as to why whites dominate swimming and why blacks dominate sprinting has to do with a slightly different position of the belly button. For some reason, a lower belly button helps sprinting and a higher belly button is better suited for swimming. You couldn’t make this stuff up.

Cam Newton, also a great passer, rushed for 700 yards last year for Carolina. It seems like black quarterbacks aren’t generally falling into the mold of people like Brady, Brees, Rodgers and Manning, really — they play differently, because they have different comparative advantages. I think this is why you see fewer at quarterback (i.e., easier for white guys to compete, because you really don’t need to rush like Cam Newton to be a great NFL quarterback at all), relatively, and more in WR and so on. The same holds true for the OL, I think, to a somewhat lesser degree.

I also think there’s more of an ethos to give to diverse family members among blacks than most whites – and for black relatives to have their hands out more than white one would. I don’t think many white athletes would give to brothers or sisters for example. They might help their parents if necessary but not lavishly.

I think we are going to see more black quarterbacks, but for what the NFL values QBs for, relatively less of them than in other positions, because of the importance of pure passing yards in the NFL now. It’s possible that guys like Newton and RGIII could change this, but it seems relatively unlikely to me, because of the way NFL defenses tend to work, and how much the pure pass has been exploited in recent years. Still, it’s interesting.
A scrambling quarterback has a much shorter shelf life than a traditional quarterback. McNabb had to transition because he got fatter and slower with age. Michael Vick is one exception, though he was out of the league for a couple of years.
It would seem that taking more direct tackle-type hits would limit your shelf life. Newton seems out to disprove this, according to what I have seen him say in print. We’ll see.

They want to own tangile things like bars, night clubs, sports clubs, etc. Athletes also let family members control their money and the family members steal from them in too many cases.
Look at how badly the estate of murdered Redskin Sean Taylor was. Family members owned homes without any means to pay the taxes or homeowner fees. Family memebers had access to bank accounts that were immediately drained after Taylor’s death.
