Markets in Everything: Prison Phone Call Quarters

In an interview after he was released from jail after a five day incarceration for a trumped up charge, Brooklyn-based artist Takeshi Miyakawa mentioned something about his stay which I’ve touched on before:

Anecdotally, Takeshi enlightend us on the intricacies of prison currency. The telephone call renders the quarter far more valuable than it ever would be in the outside world. The average exchange rate for a single quarter amongst inmates? Three dollars.

Every apartment-dwelling, no-laundry-machine-having person in the world has experienced the quarter grind.  Within the past year I’ve moved into an apartment which has its own washer and drier hookups.  Quarters, once the source of much frustration and many late-night trips to the convenience store, are like pennies to me.  (h/t Business Insider)

It’s amusing to reflect on the utter inventiveness of the human mind, particularly in confined or otherwise arduous circumstances.

When I was at prep school in England as a young boy, our ‘currency’ consisted of Polo mints, salt-n-vinegar crisps, and McVities chocolate digestives.

Of course, I would have emptied my personal treasury for a coveted bacon butty…

You should see what passes for currency when you’re trying to get out of a country, the plane is full, and there are 30 people who need something to do or a seat on the plane.

New currencies get invented by the minute.
