We’re only as good as our data.
It’s long been speculated among alt-righters that crime is under-reported in crime statistics. A piece at Mother Jones addresses the issue and points to Milwaukee and New York’s 81st precinct which local authorities are admitting has under-counted violent crime.
We should expect to see a convergence. On the one hand, cities with high crime rates have an interest in fudging crime numbers downward while cities with relatively low crime rates might want to make crime seem more prevalent than it already is in order to create a need for a greater police presence. It’s a tension between being effective and being needed.
