This was predictable. As part of the Left’s campaign to paint conservatives as Warriors Against Women, Huffington Post and Jezebel are running with stories claiming that GOP convention-goers are “hands down” the biggest clients at area strip clubs during political conventions. Along with strip club attendance, conventions also increase prostitution, sex trafficking, and child sex trafficking. This, according to the “men-in-transit” theory, or the “What Stays in Vegas” theory of sexuality.
HuffPo carried the quote of Angela Spencer of the Association of Club Executives which is a completely transparent case of quote-mining a source whose claim lacks empirical evidence:
“Hands down, the Republicans have always been our best customers,” Angela Spencer of the Association of Club Executives, a national organization for adult nightclubs, told WFAE-FM. “I have heard club owners say, ‘Boy, those Republicans really are great customers.’” (Hat tip to the Tampa Bay Times)
Here I always thought that Republicans are all closeted homosexuals. What gives?
HuffPo continues :
What happened during the last conventions? A Baylor University study found that the 2008 Democratic and Republican conventions “increased the count of Craigslist sex worker ads by a substantial amount” in the surrounding communities.
About that Baylor University study. The researchers used the level of Craigslist erotic services ads as a proxy for demand for prostitution. They found that sex ads increased by between 29% and 44% over their baseline level during 2008′s Republican convention in Minneapolis. Ads increased by between 47% and 77% in Denver, the site of the Democratic convention.
Further, the study pointed out that a plurality of convention attendees are members of the media. Which actually makes this a story about media men-in-transit rather than one about politicians and delegates. Nice try though.
