1. At The Guardian, Dean Baker argues that the U.S. can increase employment by cutting the number of hours employees work. This is pretty intuitive, but it reminds me of how little mention overtime laws get in discussions about employment incentives. If you’ve worked in blue collar industries you know that managers are very concerned with employees who work near the 40 hour cut off. The average manufacturing industry worker clocks about 3 hours of overtime per week. Just imagining here – what would happen to employment if time-and-a-half kicked in at 35 hours? 30 hours?
2. Male leaders make body language mistakes sometimes.
3. Rod Dreher links to an old Timothy Noah article in which it is argued that calling Barack Obama “skinny” is racist.
4. If we were talking about any group other than African-Americans, the finding that 58% of adult women within that group experienced sexual abuse as children or teens would be a national scandal.
