Wascally Weight Loss

A must read from Amanda Marcotte at Slate on an op-ed written by a man who argues that obese people should pay higher insurance premiums, similar to how bad drivers pay higher car insurance rates.

There’s no reason to think that the reason people end up fat is because they made the decision, as fully formed adults, to overeat and not exercise.

Yes, there’s plenty of reason.  The most obvious two being that obese people seem to be the ones who eat the most and exercise the least.  Marcotte continues:

It’s an environmental issue; we live in a culture where the cheapest food has the most empty calories and exercise opportunities elude huge portions of society.*

Ah, those elusive exercise options.  Obese people are the Elmer Fudds of exercise.

*Pun?  I hope so.

I am excited about ObamaCare because it finally puts the health of others into my wallet.

If I have co-ownership of a car, I’m able to criticize the maintenance of that car — verbally, out loud, whenever I want.

Fat shaming is a new privilege, courtesy of this fine law. And I’ve been starting it up lately with “friends” in my life who refuse to put the fake food down. Gloriously, most of my fat friends are Obama supporters.

If you have health insurance, you are already paying the health of fat people. Also, medicare and medicaid already pay for the health of lots of people who not thin.

In any case, actual fatness will not be reduced significantly in this country until there is a pharmaceutical solution.

We probably consume about 50-75% more calories per day than the USDA adult requirement but we also work hard- my day was spent stringing barbed wire through uncut brush and it was 85-90 today-and the majority of the food we consume is produced by us on our farm or by our neighbors, including butter, ice cream, eggs, meats, maple syrup and sugar, etc.

We also sell directly from our farm and in all the time we’ve been at it I can honestly say I don’t ever recall selling our foods to a single fat person. I mean there are guys sporting guts and some women they’d have called zaftig in my parents day, but obese? Never. If it was about flavor, if obesity signaled some sort of connoisseur relationship with what they eat I’d certainly be able to understand, but they aren’t even eating delicious food, they’re gorging on pap.

It’s about what you eat and the obese, like a coke-head or a tosspot are wedded to their drug of choice and it’s processed dreck and lots of it. Add to that the fact that the only exercise they get is waddling up to the fast food counter and you get malnutrition, albeit of the 21st century Western world variety.

I used to feel sorry for them, but not anymore. Like the idiot who gets tattoos on his face or these dimwits who pierce up their faces like human shower curtains the fat have to live with the consequences of their self abnegation.

It’s one thing to argue that we should treat fat people with the same respect – that’s a subjective value which has merits either way. Even arguing that fatness can be attractive has some wiggle room (very little, but there are enough desperate losers and other mentally-erred people out there).

But arguing that fatness, especially obesity, is independent of personal decision-making is just outright false. It’s akin to arguing that gravity doesn’t exist or that people can fly. Marcunt (sorry, couldn’t help myself) is denying an absolutely, 100% undeniable and incredibly simple fact of science.

(The above just about summarizes all of modern liberalism.)

  5. fattiepride 08/03/2012 at 5:01 pm

Ironically, I actually have some sympathy for fat people given the enormous amount of temptation out there – fast food restaurants on every corner, snacks at office meetings and in the breakroom, supermarkets full of crap, etc. Imagine a drug addict having a dealer on every corner.

“ObamaCare because it finally puts the health of others into my wallet.”

The rascally thing about all liberal advances since 1954, alas, is that there is no reciprocity for normal society. No tradeoff, no up-side, no tit for tat, no quid pro quo, no great responsibility that comes with great power, no equitable adjusting of the equilibrium in the social contract.

Liberalism is a take take take, with no give of any kind. You pay for Obamacare, and pay more for fatasses.

There was a woman at Wendy’s, recently, who was too fat to wait in line. She sat down, and had the man who was with her, call her on her cell phone, read her the menu, and let her place her order.
It sounds like Amanda is promoting gyms, and yet if I remember correctly, she didn’t like her own gym because she was getting checked out so much.

  8. Andy 08/03/2012 at 5:53 pm

So a fatty porker feminist makes excuses for being a fatty porker feminist. Surprise! Expect the weight gain to continue to blubberdom with massive marcotte.

  9. fattiepride 08/03/2012 at 6:05 pm

“she didn’t like her own gym because she was getting checked out so much.”

I love when unattractive feminists “complain” about how they’re hit on or “objectified” so much. Watson’s Elevatorgate was the best example. It’s such a transparent attempt at bragging about their (minimal) desirability.

And what backwater locale does Marcotte live in that tons of men would find her attractive relative to the general female population?

  10. Crank 08/03/2012 at 6:11 pm

    @andy

Whatever marcotte may be, she isn’t fat.

But her argument is obviously absurd. What if my parents don’t send me to a good school? Or don’t make sure I do my homework and get into a good college? Or don’t instill in me a good work ethic? Those things are all on them, but I will make less money as a result. Even my IQ comes from my parents. Her argument taken to its logical ends is an argument for complete income redistribution. Heck, what if my parents were career criminals and, therefore, I am much more likely to be a criminal? Do I not go to jail if I get caught?

“Society made him go astray . . .”

  11. culdesachero 08/03/2012 at 6:38 pm

“A sane, rational approach to the health crisis stemming from poor nutrition and exercise would be to change the circumstances that make people fat.”
Why do liberals always say “sane” and “rational” when they are justifying ridiculous and insane government intervenion. I’m certain she would like to see increase government controls on evil corporations.
Economists would point out that charging people for being fat is a perfectly sane and rational incentive to find a healthier way to live. People would be forced to experiment until they found something that actually worked instead of listening to the garbage put forth by the FDA, who’s diet plan is making people fat to begin with.

  12. albert magnus 08/03/2012 at 8:40 pm

I’ve never met anyone who followed the FDA’s recommendations who was fat.

And most countries we like to compare ourselves to have socialized medicine of some type or another and they are nowhere near as fat as Americans.

  13. gx1080 08/03/2012 at 9:21 pm

“There’s no reason to think that the reason people end up fat is because they made the decision, as fully formed adults, to overeat and not exercise.”

You know, that actually hurt my brain. Anti-logic hurts, you know.

  14. Suburban_elk 08/03/2012 at 9:28 pm

stringing barbed wire through uncut brush

Keeping out the riffraff. There are community gardens around here that that could use electric wires.

Imagine a drug addict having a dealer on every corner.

    Imagine that.

  15. Suburban_elk 08/03/2012 at 9:38 pm

People did not evolve with unlimited access to sugar and fat and msg and whatever other compounds and flavoring agents are doing the trick; and now they are being weeded out.

Except they are not. Instead let us water them with some Obamacare.

This passage from Madison Grant was interesting:

At the present time the Nordic race is undergoing selection through alcoholism, a peculiarly Nordic vice, and through consumption, and both these dread scourges unfortunately attack those members of the race that are otherwise most desirable, differing in this respect from filth diseases like typhus, typhoid, or smallpox. One has only to look among the more desirable classes for the victims of rum and tubercule to realize that death or mental and physical impairment through these two causes have cost the race many of its most brilliant and attractive members.

  16. Suburban_elk 08/03/2012 at 9:51 pm

Obviously the riffraff are not raiding the community gardens for food, but when people get hungry, the value of those tomatoes will be pretty and apparent. They are, after all, red.

It was quoted that “the cheapest food has the most empty calories”. That is an interesting question. It may be true when comparing food that does not have to be cooked. But unless that is stated, it is not true. Beans are the most bang for the buck. They want some garlic and carrots and salt, splurge on some sour cream and pepper.

It takes time to reset the metabolism. The comparisons to chemical dependency are valid, in some respects.

    Most people are so misinformed about the true nature of diet, exercise, and health that this sort of discussion is largely irrelevant. Three points;

    1. Studies seem to suggest that exercising is healthy but it doesn’t actually help you lose weight. 2.The officially recommended low-fat, high carb diet seems to be the exact opposite of what you should do if you actually intend to lose body fat. (see Gary Taubes’ work).
    3. A lot of the studies show a connection between obesity and disease but few actually show obesity causing disease. There seems to be a third variable (modern diet) causing both disease and obesity.
    4. Ultimately, there is surprisingly little evidence that obesity causes huge difference in health outcomes.(of the sort that would warrant higher insurance premiums, the grief that obese people are given for their weight). It’s true that obesity is a significant risk factor for disease, but the evidence for causation is simply not there. Many studies show lower mortality for overweight patients.

  18. FFY 08/03/2012 at 10:53 pm

    r.jones-

    1. True in some respects. Exercise alone will not do it if you do not alter your diet significantly. Exercise just creates a bigger calorie deficit during the day, which you can easily eat your way out of. And carbs from grains are absolutely horrible for you. High fat low carb is much better.

  19. stonerwithaboner 08/04/2012 at 1:16 am

    hahaha,

when Marcotte sees a fatso proudly eating at Chic-Fil-A will her head spin in a world of cognitive dissonance- yes those people are making a choice to eat fattening fast food in resistance of gay marriage….

  20. stonerwithaboner 08/04/2012 at 1:18 am

it actually is a complex issue-just like the credit system sets people up to fail, there is too much overly processed corn syrup soaked fast food available….

yes, you can easily get yourself into debt or you can try to save….

yes, you can go through the drive through 3 times a day or you can eat a pound of veggies….

the “system” sets you up to fail but you do have choices….

  21. Days of Broken Arrows 08/04/2012 at 1:46 am

“she didn’t like her own gym because she was getting checked out so much.”

Have you ever noticed that it’s always the unattractive, whiny feminists who seem to mysteriously get “checked out” to the point of discomfort? I dated women at college who modeled and/or had freakishly big breasts who didn’t complain nearly as much.

Sorry to take this off-topic. I just can’t imagine anyone “checking out” Marcotte. Wincing and looking away, yes. Ignoring, yes. Not noticing…yes. Checking out…um no.

  22. fattiepride 08/04/2012 at 2:55 am

“when Marcotte sees a fatso proudly eating at Chic-Fil-A will her head spin in a world of cognitive dissonance- yes those people are making a choice to eat fattening fast food in resistance of gay marriage….”

Saw this on twitter (paraphrased) regarding Chic-Fil-A boycott: “liberals boycotting a restaurant they would never dare be seen at”

  23. Podsnap 08/04/2012 at 4:40 am

Mandy doesn’t do research – even to the extent of opening her eyes and looking at the evidence right in front of them. She just makes shit up as she goes along – worked for her so far.

She mightn’t have had time to do any fatty research as she is deciphering the lip movements of a 3 year old to see if she can use them as evidence of hate crimes by its immediate family -

    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/07/27/how-likely-is-it-that-tripp-palin-didnt-use-a-gay-slur/

Un – fucking – believable post.

  24. Aperaspera 08/04/2012 at 3:17 pm

The high carb, low fat diet that the Government Experts tell us we should eat directly supports subsidized farming…now I’m not one to argue for or against Non-GMO foods or if organic is better or not, but when the cheapest eats are what the government chooses for us shouldn’t we get suspicious?
