1. This woman says she wishes her mother would have aborted her. I can’t disagree.
2. A man is released from jail nine years after his then 11 year-old daughter accused him of raping her. The girl was angry that her parents were getting a divorce so she decided to put her dad away so she couldn’t emotionally hurt him anymore. Authorities won’t press charges because they don’t want to discourage dishonest chicks from turning honest.
3. Old piece from La Griffe du Lion on racial distributions of mental retardation. This subject comes up after Texas executed a black man whose IQ was reported by most media outlets to be 61, though he was also tested at 73. As du Lion points out, Jensen found that mentally retarded blacks tend to be more highly socially functioning than mentally retarded whites. He argues that IQ tests aren’t a equivalent metric for whites and blacks alike. Though the question at hand is whether or not Texas followed a 2002 Supreme Court decision which outlawed the execution of mentally retarded people – but left the definition of mentally retarded up to the individual states – the deeper issue is a scientific one that the highest court is not prepared to address.
4. A writer delves into the mysterious beating of Dan Rather back in the 1980s in which a man reportedly asked Rather “What’s the frequency, Kenneth?” That phrase was popularized by REM and the author asserts that the incident has forever haunted Rather. The author has a hypothesis. An interesting read.
