Talking about dog whistles. At Reason, Nick Gillespie provides transcript of a recent MSNBC segment featuring Lawrence O’Donnell and Martin Bashir. Here’s what the feverish O’Donnell said:

I’m curious to learn, just for the sake of trivia, when President Obama began playing golf. Was he like me? I started playing at the age of 18 amid Tiger Mania.
Obama did derp yesterday to Redditers that his favorite basketball player of all time is Michael Jordan – a man whose marital infidelities are legend but also came (as with JFK’s activities) before the modern media age. Jordan has also been a part of Obama’s fundraising efforts, and it has been reported that Jordan influenced Woods’ infidelities. Has he also influenced Obama? Your ears probably perked up a little, you racist.
Obama also state on Reddit that he is a fan because he’s a “Bulls guy” – a dog whistle to Chicagoans – which should rankle Chris Matthews who believes that mentioning Obama’s Chicago roots is racist (quick, when you think of dirty Chicago politics do you think of black people or do you think of the Daley clan and Blago?). The only relevant question is “when does this shit stop?”
It all reminds me of Dallas pol John Wiley Price’s infamous offense-taking to the term “black hole”.
Career and roots seem to be two very distinct things. Did Steve Sailer’s father say that he had his “roots” at Lockheed-Martin or whatever aerospace firm he worked at ? A continual track record of working at dubious public sector jobs of mostly ceremonial value makes it all even more dubious.

Obama didn’t move to Chicago until he was a grown man of 24. His roots, therefore, are in Hawaii and Indonesia.
