1. The New Jersey shooter is identified as Terence Tyler, an ex-Marine (I saw current Marines online getting angry about the term “ex-Marine”; “once a Marine, always a Marine”; this is why people call you jarheads). Looking for reasons for this killing, the two victims are young white people though I doubt that race has anything to do with the shooting. Looking at Tyler’s twitter account, he doesn’t seem to express any racial hostility. He seems to have hated being a Marine, though his complaints don’t seem too far from what we’d expect. He writes a lot about women, working out, and his diet. This might be a case of beta rage. The shooting might have been some sort of lover’s triangle, but the young man that was killed by Tyler has clues on Facebook that he might have been gay. Something else noteworthy though, the man killed by Tyler wrote on Facebook that his nickname was “Nigga Beatdown” but there are no other clues to indicate that he was overtly racist.
2. NYT piece on the similarities between 1992 and 2012.
3. George H. Smith on Herbert Spencer’s criticism of universal suffrage and the end results of democracy.
Spencer maintained that extending the franchise would be desirable only if it were accompanied by a decrease in the powers of government. Only if the dangerous weapon of governmental power were placed beyond the reach of everyone could we be reasonably certain that no group or class would use political power to exploit others.
4. A liberal rag is surprised to learn that libertarian David Koch is not opposed to gay marriage and is in favor of cutting the defense budget.
