The Power of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’

A reader asked me if I had come across the new Bill Burr standup.  I looked for it on Youtube, couldn’t find it, but came across this bit from his podcast that, as usual with Burr, rings true.

Burr opens the cast by claiming that the secret to success in life is the word “yes” and the word “no”.  Becoming a person who is basically honest about what they want to do and where they want to go is one key secret to happiness.  As Burr points out, this is hard for some people to do, and I’d point out that the “no” portion of the proscription is the harder one to master.

The point reminds me of a couple, in their mid-50s, that I waited on a few months ago.  They (she) talked my ear off, and the woman was keen on bragging to me about how much attention her husband provided her.  She said “and he’s only told me ‘no’ once”.  He nodded enthusiastically, but I swear I could hear his soul screaming.  Perhaps that guy was truly never out of sync with his wife, but I doubt it.

Was that comedy? Fucking brutal. “How bout those rednecks…” Zzzzz, like every other hack out there. The worst part is how this he thinks this makes him edgy. And another thing, those rednecks are the only who fight for this shithole country anymore. Only to be trashed by this fucking loser.
