Not much to say other than demographic chickens coming home to roost, not that anything can really be done about it at this point.
Hanna Rosin wrote the following yesterday afternoon about the possibility that single women might become the new rebellious white male. In the same way that lower middle class white men veered towards the GOP – against their economic best interests, supposedly – Rosin believes that single women might do the same:
So which way will the single woman lean? You’d think that she would flee the party of masculinity, unless it was happening at the Sigma Chi house (joke, friends, don’t scream). But as the white men already showed us, people don’t always vote for what we see as their obvious interests. The women may be more socially inclined to Democrats, but they also may be offended by, say, the Obama campaign’s hipster portrayal of your average woman as wholly and utterly dependent on various Obama assistance programs from birth to death, especially considering that they themselves are making it on their own. They may also be surprisingly attached to the idea of marriage and traditional family values despite the obvious reality in their own house (the Bristol Palin effect). Democrats, tread lightly, and consider yourself warned.
I’ll believe it when I….wait, no, it’ll never happen.
Exit polls show a gigantic marriage gap. Single women voted for Obama 67 – 31. Single men were at 56 – 40. These stats are partially a function of age and race, but they bode poorly for the Republican candidate given the decline of marriage. When can we expect this cohort to break towards the “self-reliance candidate,” and when have we ever seen female cohorts lean in that direction? Further, why did white men make the break when they did? For single women to do that, they’d have to face similar pressures, and it’s hard to imagine that the media elite or academics or pop culture generators or just general public sentiment will push down on single women the same way white men have pushed down on. Therefore, there will be no need for single women to not dance with the one who brought them. White men were rebelling against culture-shapers who despised them to their very core. Nobody will do any of that to single women. When single women are denigrated, there are plenty of people with cultural clout to support them.
