Sending a UN Ambassador to do a Secretary of State’s job
In today’s press conference, President Obama white knighted for UN ambassador Susan Rice after Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticized her remarks on Benghazi. Obama said:
So President Obama sent Rice to speak on television about international issues including Benghazi. Rice’s statements were wholly detached from the truth. She blamed a video for the attack and said that there was no evidence that the attacks were pre-planned.
But in the presser Obama makes the astounding statement that Rice was both spokesperson for his administration – sent by the White House to handle the issue – but also only the UN ambassador. So he sent an unqualified person to answer questions on this volatile topic. But surely both Obama and Rice deserve criticism just as George W. Bush and Colin Powell deserve criticism for the lie of Iraqi WMDs.
Rice presented herself as the spokesperson for the administration and she didn’t play the “I’m only the UN ambassador” card. So she’s fair game and Obama’s confrontation of McCain and Graham (he went through the press to address them but didn’t want to go through the press to address the families of the men killed in Benghazi) is pure rhetoric and manufactured outrage. The press seems to enjoy Obama’s fire though, so that’s all that matters.
