Not sure that this is new. I saw Jethro Tull in the early 90s in a large club (2000 cap.). They had a no smoking policy at the request of the band. Someone lit a cigarette midway through the 3rd or 4th song. The band stopped mid-song and insisted it be put out.
God forgive me for saying this, I don’t want to sound mean, but I hate hearing fat people make a fuss about someone smoking. I have had to bite my tongue a number of times.
Do you know that people flag Photos which feature people smoking? The under 21 crowd go rabid when they see people smoking.
Are people who smoke any worse than fat people who eat large portions of junk food in public? What about people, fat or thin who refuse to exercise, drive their cars everywhere?
It might be hard to sing if someone is blowing smoke in your face. I guess I could see it from a performer. However, liberal hysteria around smoking probably causes a psychosomatic reaction just by the sight or tiniest smell. Smokers are a convenient target for all self righteous wannabe health nuts.
I recall in the 70s, that most old movies and shows had characters that smoked. I notice even watching classic movies today that images of characters smoking were either edited out or the movie just is not shown anymore. What is up with that? It seems like a huge loss of our culture.
This is the woman(old woman) who opened a concert asking,”Has anyone seen Mollie?” which is slang for the Extacy drug.
Madonna herself used to smoke. Check the “Into the Groove” video, not to mention hundreds of photos. This was a source of controversy when she emerged — other female singers at the time, like Debbie Harry and Cyndi Lauper, did not smoke openly.
@Muay Tyson- I was wondering what “Molley” is. Thanks:)
Speaking of movies where the characters smoked. Has anyone seen Breakfast In Tiffany’s? Audrey Hepburn and her lead, chain smoked throughout the movie. Mickey Ronnie playing the Jappanese landlord was just eye opening as to what went on in Hollywood during that time.
Timothy Dalton smoked in his one James Bond movie back in the 80′s.
This was a source of controversy when she emerged
I have to say, I was deeply immersed in pop culture in the 1980s (for better or worse), and I don’t recall Madonna’s cigarettes — or anyone’s cigarettes — being a big deal. At all.
Cool people smoked then. It was par for the course. All this celebrity nannying and scolding crap didn’t really start ’til the late ’90s.
Basically, once the Baby Boomers became parents, it’s like the entire world suddenly had to get fucking childproofed. And the whole SWPL thing is basically the product of that environment.
OT question to Chuck:
Obsidian calls you?!? You gave him your phone number (and presumably other real world information)?!?! Have you met in person too?
Here you go, here’s a nice list of traits.
The liberals are the establishment. Think of the vegans; how uptight, how picky, what primadonnas they are. Their heart bleeds for the starving African yet the liberal will only drink organic coffee and certified produce.
Think of their hypocricy…anything goes! But something is always restricted and that is white racial awareness. It is their boogeyman, the monster under the bed. There might be a klansmen behind that tree, or a neonazi under that rock.
I believe they have made the same mistake their parents made. Anything we restrict, we make stronger. By outlawing WN, they make its adherants more fanatical.
In 10 years, how will kids piss off liberal mommy and daddy? Listening to satanic music? Getting pregnant? No way, they approve. Shave your head and become a racist, that will show your rebellion.
I don’t get libs who think smoking cigs is bad but smoking weed is good. Pot burns hot and is taken deeply into the lungs…and that’s supposed to be okay? Duh.
What the fuck? Madonna used to smoke Marlboro’s continuously. Hypocrite.
The fems and the lefties are the new church ladies – thin, pursed lips, constantly tut-tutting.
Let people smoke wherever they want, gamble, get fat, whatever. The right is about freedom.
Think of their hypocricy…anything goes! But something is always restricted and that is white racial awareness.
Think about music – literally anything goes as far as sounds and lyrics goes – industrial noise, splattercore, death metal, the racist lyrics of rap, whatever – the limits have truly been reached. And aren’t the hipsters proud of their diverse musical leanings. Except one genre – white-powermusic is de-facto banned. Hard to get, not much on the internet, the gigs get banned, protested etc. I’m not a huge fan of 4-4 hard rock with no solos and lyrics shouted in a faux-north England accent – but the hypocrisy is stark.
m,
reminds me of when i was at a blues festival in the mountains of colorado. of course, lots and lots of people were smoking weed in the crowd. me and my family members who were standing by watching saw some granola-eating woman (who was chubby but who was also “earthy”) chastise a guy who was smoking a cigarette. she asked him if he would put it out while he was next to her. he told her no and that he was a vet and had fought so that he could have a smoke. she looked as if she’d never been talked to like that before.
100 percent correct about the totalitarianism of the liberal herd
anytime these types, esp females, get any power or influence, they immediately demand that everybody fart on cue
good catch of deflecting embarrassment by chastising others — it shows that despite global fame and milions of dollars, madonna is a base, insecure, nasty brat of a brute
truly, a shining example to hundreds of millions of women, well done folks
I see the general point of the post and agree, but am willing to pick on the example. I had a relative on my mom’s side who worked in a nightclub and died of lung cancer even though he himself never smoked. So my two cents is that second hand smoke is indeed dangerous. He, and madonna, did choose their careers knowing people smoke in nightclubs. But I don’t want to go down that road too far. I feel little sympathy for, say, a guy who makes his money doing something illegal and gets hurt, but being a musician is legit. Buzzfeed says the video has been removed, can’t see what kind of venue it was. Would I stop the show? Not likely, but I guess not being a prima donna is why I work a day job behind a desk.
The constant liberal refrain is ‘dont judge me’ yet they judge those who do not toe the complete liberal line. Being anti-smoking allows liberals to claims higher status by not being a dumb prole and they can position themselves as anti-big biz. Once you grok the lib mindset, everything they do is robotic reflexive reactions.
Madonna had no problem with smoking when it was still OK, see below:

Madonna is pathetic, she should be put out of her misery for her own good

“I don’t get libs who think smoking cigs is bad but smoking weed is good. Pot burns hot and is taken deeply into the lungs…and that’s supposed to be okay? Duh.”
Thank you m- no fucking shit! You’ll never get a straight answer to this though. The real answer is simply fashion, but they’re too embarrassed to admit it.
Such a heavy brush to paint with!
